This Commission was
established in response to Pastoral Statements on
Criminal Justice.
In 2000 the U.S.
Catholic Bishops issued a Pastoral Letter
calling for new efforts to implement models of
restorative justice that address crime in terms
of the harm done to victims and communities, not simply violation of law.
In that same year, the New York Catholic Bishops
also called for a restorative approach to those
who have been harmed as well as to those who
have done injury to others.
