What's Going on in Our Parish?
Volunteer Sign-Up Christian Service / Outreach Ministries
Mater Christi Prayer Shawl Ministry: The knitting and crochet club is now called Mater Christi Prayer Shawl Ministry. Their first monnthly meeting will start Thursday 4/29 from 1 - 3 at the Parish Center. They will be meeting the last Thursday of each month thereafter. J. Olimpo and N. Cullings are the coordinators.
Communion Minister Needed: Each Sunday following our parish's 10 AM Mass, a lay Eucharistic minister brings holy communion to about a dozen residents at Beverwyck Terace, which is an assisted living facility on Krumkill Road. There is need for an additional one or two volunteers, so that each volunteer could cover this assignment once every 4 or 5 weeks. If you would be willing to offer this valuable and much appreciated service, please contact our parish office at (518) 489-3204.
RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: The RCIA program is for people interested in investigating the practices and traditions of the Catholic faith. A small team fosters support for a journey to a full initiation in our Roman Catholic tradition within parish families. Some people may have been raised in other Christian traditions and now feel called to become Catholic. Others may have been raised with non-Christian or no traditions and these individuals will be prepared to receive Baptism as well as Confirmation and Eucharist. Each year at the Easter Vigil, the holiest night of the year, people join not simply our parish, but our Roman Catholic Church in rites and celebrations that renew the whole life of the parish. If you are interested in exploring the Catholic Faith, please call call the Parish Office at (518) 489-3204.
Green and help our school! Many of you may have noticed the new green dumpster in the parking
lot. This dumpster is provided by Green Fiber - a company that takes
clean (not contaminated by food) paper products and turns them into
insulation. Not only does this help our environment, but for every
ton we collect, the school receives $25! So feel free to bring your
paper recycables (newspapers, magazines, phone books, etc.) and
deposit them in. Please crush all cardboard boxes. Thank you for
helping our school and our environment!
We are in need of additional volunteers to assist with driving elderly parishioners to Sunday Mass. Three of us are on rotation now, and with the upcoming merger with St. Teresa, the demands for this service is growing. There is a gentleman in the Elsmere area we have been helping for some time and a recent request for transportation from a new resident of the apartments off Blessing Road in North Bethlehem. A group of people who now walk to St. Teresa's will be looking for a ride up New Scotland Avenue after our parishes merge. All these folks are mobile and really appreciate the service we provide. If you can help, please call Michael Moore at (518) 489-0051. Thank you!
Additional Ministers Needed:
We are in need of additional Ushers, especially at the 4 PM Saturday mass and 10 AM Sunday mass. Please consider volunteering for this ministry. If you regularly attend either of these liturgies, please volunteer to serve in the Usher Ministry at that Mass. It doesn't take much of your time. Contact the Parish Office at (518) 489-3204 or in person, or call Kenn Toomey at (518) 438-7356 to volunteer. The Hospitality Ministry is also looking for help to continue to build a welcoming community within our new parish. If you have any questions, please contact Elaine Dimase or (518) 489-0386
Greeting Card Ministry:
At this time we have 115 parishioners who are homebound, or living in a Nursing Home, Assisted Living or Independent Living Residence. We currently have 50 volunteers who have joined the Greeting Card Ministry. We would love to have some more who are willing to 'adopt' a parishioner by sending cards once a month, at holiday times and special occasions. Please contact Anne Reutemann-Berroyer or (518) 489-3204 if you are willing to help.
Alzheimer's Care Team Program: We are looking for people who have 2 hours per month to assist someone in need. Discover the rewards of volunteering to support someone suffering with memory loss and/or their caregiver. By joining the team, you only give the time you can when you can because there are several who can share the tole of helping a family. If you would like to receive more information about our Faith in Action Care Team Program, please contact Sandy Monahan at Eddy Alzheimer's Services or (518) 238-4167.
Mater Christi's Food Pantry: Hunger never takes a vacation. Thank you so much for all the support you have given us in helping our neighbors. Occasionally we are asked what we are in need of. This month, we are in need of: canned meats, beans, tea, rice, pancake mix, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, instant coffee (decaf or regular), ground coffee (decaf), canned seafood, soup, bottled juice, boxed potatoes, jelly and deodorant. We accept all non-perishable food items with current dates. Donations can also be left in the collection boxes at both Church entrances, the parish office or at the Crestwood Plaza or 301 NEW Scotland Ave branches of Trustco Bank.
