The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius: Retreat in Everyday Life

The Spiritual Exercises are an experience of directed prayer for people who desire to prepare for even more beneficial service of God in the world. Those who make the Exercises seek to grow in self-knowledge and appreciation in order to join Jesus in loving service of the world.

St Ignatius of Loyola developed the Exercises in the 1520s as he sought to share his experience of conversion with others and inspire them to come even closer to God.

People can make the Spiritual Exercises in the midst of their daily lives. These individuals commit to praying daily and over the course of several months, participants meet once weekly with a spiritual director for about an hour. Together they explore the participant’s unique relationship with God using scripture, contemplation, meditation and imaginative prayer.

Spiritual Direction
Spiritual Direction is a process in which individuals are assisted in developing a closer relationship with God. It assists a person paying attention and responding to this personally communicating God in order to become more open to the presence of God in all aspects of life and to enhance personal growth. It helps one to discern and respond to God’s call in one’s life and take the Gospel message seriously. Spiritual direction is not counseling, therapy or psychological help.

For more information, to participate in the spiritual exercises or to obtain a spiritual advisor please email the Consultation Center or call (518) 489-4431.
