Banking on Life & Debt (ADULT)
This video is narrated by Martin Sheen. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were created after World War II to assist nations devastated by war. Its mandate was extended to assist nations newly released from colonialism. Fifty years later, this "new world economic order" has become a major cause of debt, export imbalances and financial instability in developing nations. This documentary visits three countries where the influences of the international banking community have resulted in diminished living conditions--Ghana, where the government can no longer offer health benefits for its people; Brazil, where poor people work garbage dumps instead of their own land for food; and The Philippines, where grassroots groups are calling attention to unfair debt repayment schemes. Banking on Life and Debt argues that it is time for another change in world monetary policies.
