Vision of Vatican II for Today, The - Program 4 (ADULT)
Part 4, "The Church Before and After Vatican II". Michael Himes examines the "Dogmatic Constitution on the Church: Lumen Gentium" (Light of Nations). Before the Council the Church ad two missions--sanctification and a social mission. Clergy performed the sanctification. Nuns and laypeople did the social mission. Both were important but the mission of sanctification was considered a "higher" calling. In Lumen Gentium both these missions are place on equal ground. This radical restatement of the Church's mission has profound impact on how we view the Church today.

Vision of Vatican II for Today, The - Program 5 (ADULT)
Part 5, "The Sacrament of Everyday Life". Michael Himes. Life does not have two spheres: the sacred and the secular. The Holy Spirit runs through the secular. The Living God comes to us in everyday life. This insight has many applications. Himes looks at several, including the baptismal rite of Vatican II in which parents are blessed and named as the primary educators of children in the Christian life. Again, drawing on the rich tradition of Vatican II, Himes gives us a vision of a Church where all the baptized participate as full and equal partners.

Foundations of Christianity - Program 1 - Mystery (Adult, Older adolescent)
Michael Himes draws on poetry, Alice in Wonderland, and Shakespeare to show the only way we can speak of the deepest things is in metaphors. This is certainly true of the deepest Mystery--God. We are caught between saying nothing because we can never express God adequately (only God can) and having to say something. Himes shows us how to say that something while always being led deeper into that Mystery that is God.

Foundations of Christianity - Program 2 - Conversion (Adult, older adolescent)
Michael Himes. Conversion is a life-long process. It occurs through the nurturing of others, and through imitating others and ultimately imitating Christ. Himes tells us of the external and internal word of God. Others speak of the external word to us and only Holy Spirit speaks the internal word. Only when the two "line up" is another step taken in conversion.

Foundations of Christianity - Program 3 - Faith (Adult, older adolescents)
Drawing on the thought of Karl Rahner and H. Richard Niebuhr, Michael Himes shows that faith is best described as "radical monotheism." Faith is trusting in God who possesses us, as opposed to a God we possess. This approach to faith changes everything because we become a "pilgrim people," a people led further and further into life and truth.

Foundations of Christianity - Program 4 - Hope (Adult, older adolescents)
Michael Himes sees hope as "Christian realism." It is a middle way between utopianism (a belief we can do it all) and despair (the belief we can do nothing). Himes draws on Dante, T.S. Eliot, Friedrich Schleiermacher and Goethe to illustrate his points. In his conclusion we are moved to embrace a broken world loved by God--as Jesus did.

Foundations of Christianity - Program 5 - Love (Adult, older adolescents)
Michael Himes. Love is choice--a choice for the good of the other. This choice demands wisdom and courage. Himes draws on the insights of Jesus, St. Paul, Thomas Aquinas, and Martin Buber to show that love is the source and summit of all the virtues.
