More than 3,000 Catholics from throughout the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany will converge on Our Lady of Martyrs Shrine in Auriesville on Saturday, September 22, for the Hearts Aflame Eucharistic Congress. Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger will be the keynote speaker and principal celebrant of the day’s liturgy, at which priests of the Diocese will recommit themselves to the promises of their priesthood and the faithful will renew their baptismal promises.

After a lot of prayer and reflection, in the best interest of everyone involved — survivors, clergy, parishioners and our local Church — we have contacted Albany District Attorney David Soares to invite him to review our records and look at how sexual abuse cases have been handled historically in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, to what extent survivors were heard and believed, what processes were followed, and what consequences resulted.

In a letter issued on Aug. 31, 2018, Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger called on all priests of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany to join him in making a public restatement of the promises of their priesthood during the diocesan Hearts Aflame Eucharistic Congress to be held Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs in Auriesville.

Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger today named Christopher Signor as the new principal of Catholic Central High School, a 7th–12th grade Catholic school in Troy, effective Aug. 20. The decision reflects the search committee’s unanimous recommendation to Bishop Scharfenberger. Signor has served as principal of Bishop Maginn High School in Albany since 2015.

While I am heartened by my brother bishops proposing ways for our Church to take action in light of recent revelations – and I agree that a national panel should be commissioned, duly approved by the Holy See – I think we have reached a point where bishops alone investigating bishops is not the answer...
