Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger, along with diocesan clergy, religious, and laity, will perform in the seventh annual Concert for Vocations at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 125 Eagle Street, Albany, on Tuesday, Aug. 3, beginning at 7 p.m.

In light of allegations of sexual abuse that were first reported in a Child Victims Act (CVA) case, Father John “Jack” Varno, a retired priest in the Diocese of Albany who serves as a sacramental minister in several parishes, has voluntarily withdrawn from public ministry while the case moves forward.

Deacons Matthew Duclos, Kyle Gorenski, Daniel McHale, Nathaniel Resila, and Stephen Yusko will be ordained to the priesthood for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany by Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger at a Mass and Rite of Ordination at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany on Saturday, June 19, at 11 a.m. The ordination will be livestreamed on the diocesan website at

Bishop Edward Scharfenberger has announced the following pastoral assignment: Father Steve Matthews has been appointed pastor of St. James Church, Chatham; St. John the Baptist Church, Valatie, and Church of St. Joseph, Stuyvesant Falls and Stottville, effective July 1, 2021.

In light of information that surfaced when the Diocese of Springfield released its list of clergy offenders June 2, Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger has placed Rev. Jeffrey L’Arche, a priest of the LaSalette Missionaries and pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam and St. Stephen’s Church in Hagaman, on administrative leave, effective immediately. While on leave, Father L’Arche is barred from officiating at sacraments, wearing clerical garb, or presenting himself as a priest.
