In keeping with the expiration of the mask mandate in most public places in New York State, the Diocese of Albany will no longer mandate masks be worn in diocesan churches and offices, effective Feb. 10, 2022.

Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger has announced the appointment of Loida A. Sarabia as Chief Financial Officer for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, effective January 31.

Catholic Schools Week, an annual tradition of celebrating Catholic education, is underway this week (January 30 – February 5) at the 21 schools located in the Diocese of Albany with special activities and festive events planned at each school.

Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger will celebrate Midnight Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Christmas Eve, beginning with a musical prelude at 11:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 24.

Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger has accepted the resignation of Mary DeTurris Poust, diocesan director of communications, effective Jan. 28, 2022. Ms. DeTurris Poust has served in the role since September 2015, after initially being brought on six months earlier to create and maintain a social media presence for the bishop and the 14-county diocese. A search is underway for her replacement.

We have received word that some people in our parishes are receiving scam emails that appear to be from Bishop Scharfenberger and seek donations.

In a move designed to strengthen the future of Catholic education in the Capital Region, the Albany Diocesan School Board (ADSB), under the leadership of Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger, today announced it will create a new school in Latham that will allow for a continuum of Catholic education from pre-K to 12th grade in one location. The new Catholic Central School is set to open its doors in September 2022.
