Bishop Edward Scharfenberger encourages all in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany to join Pope Leo XIV in praying for those impacted by Friday morning’s devastating flash flooding in Texas.
After praying the Angelus on Sunday in Rome, Pope Leo, speaking in English, said, “I would like to express sincere condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones, in particular their daughters, who were at the summer camp, in the disaster caused by flooding of the Guadalupe River in Texas in the United States. We pray for them.”
According to news reports, more than 80 people are confirmed dead with dozens more missing. A Christian summer camp now confirms 27 campers and counselors are among the dead.
“As God’s people, I pray that we see the needs that exist, not only in our parishes, or our communities, but also in the world around us,” said Bishop Scharfenberger. “We serve a loving God, a great healer. I pray that all in our Diocese will intercede to Him on behalf of our brothers and sisters suffering in Texas right now.”
