BISHOP SCHARFENBERGER TO SIGN OVER PROPERTY FOR HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL

August 19, 2020

Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger will sign over the deed to a two-acre parcel of property for the future Holocaust Memorial in Niskayuna to Dr. Michael Lozman, as President of the Capital District Jewish Holocaust Memorial, Inc., on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 12:30 p.m. at the diocesan Pastoral Center, 40 North Main Ave., Albany. The land, which is adjacent to Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna, is being gifted to the Holocaust Memorial committee by the Bishop and Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.

The interfaith partnership was born in 2017, when Dr. Lozman first approached Bishop Scharfenberger with the idea of creating the local Holocaust Memorial to serve as a place of prayer, remembrance and education. After design updates, community forums, and eventual approval, plans for the memorial moved ahead. The Aug. 20 property closing marks the next step toward making Dr. Lozman’s idea a reality.
