Bishop Scharfenberger undergoes successful colectomy surgery at St. Peter's

November 12, 2021

Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger underwent colectomy surgery on November 10 at St. Peter’s Hospital to remove a portion of his colon due to the presence of cancer cells discovered in a sigmoid polyp during a routine colonoscopy. The surgery, which successfully removed the cancer cells, was performed laparoscopically with what is known as the DaVinci robot. Bishop Scharfenberger wishes to thank his doctors and the medical staff at St. Peter’s for their excellent care and reminds anyone over the age of 45 to schedule a colonoscopy. At this time, all of us at the Diocese of Albany ask for prayers for Bishop Scharfenberger’s continued recovery and for the recovery of all those struggling with colon cancer or any form of cancer.
