New Principal Named to Catholic Central High School in Troy

August 13, 2018

Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger today named Christopher Signor as the new principal of Catholic Central High School, a 7th–12th grade Catholic school in Troy, effective Aug. 20. The decision reflects the search committee’s unanimous recommendation to Bishop Scharfenberger.  Signor has served as principal of Bishop Maginn High School in Albany since 2015.

“Mr. Signor’s desire to lead Catholic Central is great news for both the school and our larger diocesan community,” Bishop Scharfenberger said. “Chris has a strong commitment to the students of our Diocese. His passion for secondary education and love of Christ is abundantly clear and our students, their families, and our teachers continue to be the beneficiaries of his many gifts and talents.”

Mr. Signor has vast experience in the role of principal. In addition to serving as principal of Bishop Maginn High School, Chris has also served as principal of Saratoga Central Catholic High School before taking a position in public education only to ultimately return to administration in the Diocese. Prior to his service as a principal, Mr. Signor also gained experience working as a social studies teacher in both Catholic and public schools.

“I believe in a promising future for Catholic education.” Mr. Signor said. “My calling has led me to Catholic High, and I welcome the chance to provide the highest quality, well-rounded spiritual and academic program for our students, one that prepares them for the challenges ahead while teaching the joy of our Catholic theology.”

Mr. Signor earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University, a master’s degree in Social Studies Education from the University at Albany, and is a certified New York State School District Administrator and New York State School Administrator/Supervisor.

A parishioner at St. Clement’s Church, Christopher lives in Saratoga with his wife and children.

Mr. Signor replaces Dr. Christopher Bott, who led Catholic Central High from 2006 to 2018. Dr. Bott recently took a position in the Catholic School Office as Associate Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Albany.

Michael Tolan, a current member of the Bishop Maginn High School administrative team and staff, will assume the responsibilities of interim principal at Bishop Maginn effective immediately. The search for the next principal of Bishop Maginn High School will begin in early 2019.

Giovanni Virgiglio, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese, said Mr. Signor is a “creative and innovative servant leader. He has a keen ability to examine obstacles and turn them into opportunities for students while inspiring others to do the same. We will miss his presence at Bishop Maginn, but take comfort in knowing his many accomplishments and partnerships will continue with Mr. Tolan at the helm.”
