Special Collection for 2018 Disaster and Emergency Assistance

October 19, 2018

Parishes throughout the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany have been asked to take up a special collection to assist those devastated by recent hurricanes in the south and southeast and in anticipation of other storms and calamities likely in the months ahead.

“The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has asked the Diocese of Albany to take a special collection to cover the humanitarian, educational, and worship-site needs created by domestic disasters,” Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger said in a memo to pastors, parish life directors, and parish administrators.

When a disaster strikes, Catholic Charities USA is the national office where local Catholic Charities’ agencies request funds to help meet basic needs and begin long-term recovery efforts for families and individuals affected by disasters. Parishes will be taking up collections on or near the weekend of October 28.

For individuals who would like to contribute to the fund directly, visit the Hurricane Relief Fund page of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany.
