Background Checks and Screening

All diocesan clergy, seminarians, employees, and volunteers that have regular contact with children are required to submit to a background check run by our background screening vender, TruView BSI.  Employment and volunteering with children are contingent on a clear check.

Our background screening includes checks of social security, national and state Sex Offender list (level 1-3), the national criminal registry, and New York State records.

All temporarily assigned priests and visiting international priests must give proof of a cleared background check, such as through Praesidium, and must participate in our safe environment training. Background checks will be run if they don’t meet our requirements.

The Office of Safe Environment is responsible for assuring that background checks are conducted and performs a comprehensive review of all criminal records to determine if the individual is unsuitable for employment or volunteer activity.
